Fire (1966) Short film starring William Burroughs and Antony Balch. A cinematic interpretation of many of
Burroughs’ major themes. Includes d ramatizations, cut
ups, and psychological experimentation based on the works of William S.
Burroughs and Brion Gysin. Samuel
Beckett’s "Film" (1965) starring Buster Keaton. Short twenty-minute, almost
totally silent film (no dialogue or music, save one 'shhh!') in which Buster
Keaton attempts to evade observation by an all-seeing eye. But, as the film is
based around Bishop Berkeley's principle 'esse est percipi' (to be is to be
perceived), Keaton's very existence conspires against his efforts. Chris
Marker’s La Jetee (1962). The story of a man forced to
explore his memories in the wake of World War III's devastation, told through
still images. Time travel, still images, past,
present and future and the aftermath of World War III. The tale of a man, a
slave, sent back and forth, in and out of time, to find a solution to the
world's fate, to replenish its decreasing stocks of food, medicine and energies,
and in doing so, resulting in a perpetual memory of a lone female, life, death
and past events that are recreated on an airport jetty.
