In response to your inquiry about what I put in the sample pens you sent me, here is what I did: 1. In one pen I put acrylic paint. I premixed Golden heavy body tube paint, Vallejo brand pouring medium and some water. I put some in the pen and shook it up more with the included mixing ball.
The paint flowed well through the pen with no skipping or streaking; however because of the amount of dilution of the paint, it had a reduced pigment load.
It therefore made a glazed, translucent-like effect. That is fine for some applications, but I wanted to be certain that the pen could handle more pigment particles, so I added FW Martin Acrylic Artist Ink to the same pen.
Of course, it worked beautifully because the ink is already formulated to flow through the minuscule nib of a technical pen.
2. In a totally different pen I put a mixture of Grumbacher tube oil paint, Windsor & Newton Liquin and Weber Odorless Turpenoid. Of course none of that is actually odorless, so I recommend anyone use adequate ventilation.
The tube oil paint is generally thick-bodied, viscous and heavily pigmented. Frankly I did not have completely high expectations.
I loved it! I was also able to add more turpenoid into the pen and dilute the paint further without adverse effect to the line quality.
I tested both pens on both canvas and paper. The paper was untreated, but the canvas was gessoed. The oil paint took slightly longer to dry than the acrylic, but far quicker I thought than had I brushed it on.
